About the Journal

The Journal of Urban Sociology (JUS) (p-ISSN 2620-5211 | e-ISSN 2656-3339) is a peer-reviewed, open-access journal published biannually, in April and October, by the Sociology Laboratory, Department of Sociology, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Wijaya Kusuma Surabaya, Indonesia. Established in 2018 in collaboration with the Ikatan Sosiologi Indonesia (ISI) and the Asosiasi Program Studi Sosiologi Indonesia (APSSI), JUS is part of a collective effort to advance sociological scholarship in Indonesia and beyond. All articles are assigned a DOI under the prefix 10.30742.

Aims and Scope. JUS provides an academic platform for original ideas and research in sociology, with a primary focus on social life in urban societies and in communities undergoing urbanization. The journal conceptualizes “urban” not merely as a geographical space but as a social context that reflects modernity, social differentiation, power relations, and structural transformation in contemporary societies. Its scope includes, but is not limited to, urban and community sociology, social inequality and poverty, multiculturalism and identity, power relations and governance, gender, environmental issues, and social transformation. JUS encourages critical, interdisciplinary, and context-sensitive approaches that deepen understanding of urban issues at the local, national, and global levels. The journal publishes research articles (field and literature studies), theoretical and methodological articles, policy studies, and book reviews. 

Peer Review. All submissions first undergo editorial screening for their fit with the journal’s aims and scope, their compliance with the Author Guidelines, and a similarity check (maximum similarity index of 15%). Manuscripts that pass this stage are evaluated by at least two independent reviewers through a double-blind peer review process. Authors are required to revise their manuscripts in response to the reviewers’ comments before a final decision is made.

Open Access and License. JUS provides immediate open access to all of its content. Authors retain the copyright of their articles, which are published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0).

Submission. Manuscripts may be written in English or Indonesian; English is preferred, and English manuscripts must be professionally proofread. Before submitting, authors should ensure that their manuscripts fall within the scope of JUS, follow the Author Guidelines, and use the official article template (JUS Template 2027) Manuscripts are submitted online through the journal’s OJS.
